Gargoyles
Gargoyles are traditionally thought to be created during the medieval period. Gargoyles were placed on the roofs of Egyptian temples where their mouths served as a spout for water. Gargoyles were also seen on Greek temples. They were carved into a variety of dangerous scary looking animals. The name gargoyle was from St. Romanus, or Romain. A legend story told said he saved his country from a monster by the name of Goji, sometimes called Gargouille. The monster was so scary looking that it frightened evil spirits. This led to some calling the monster a protector and soon gargoyles placed on churches and other important buildings. Throughout history gargoyles have been created in a number of different images and figures. They are continued to be used as water and rain spouts.
